iPad Mini 7 Has Display Hardware Changes That Likely Fix Jelly Scrolling

One of the main complaints about the prior-generation iPad mini 6 was "jelly scrolling" or screen tearing, and it sounds like it's a problem that Apple may have addressed with hardware updates to the iPad mini 7 display. In the most recent episode of the Six Colors Podcast, Jason Snell and Dan Moren discussed the new ‌iPad mini 7‌, and shared some information about the display. Snell said that it was his understanding that there have b een unspecified adjustments to the display hardware in the ‌iPad mini 7‌ that should make a difference when it comes to jelly scrolling. Snell didn't provide a source, but his information likely comes directly from Apple. There is only an "implication" that the changes were to fix jelly scrolling, however, and Snell made it clear that because no one has seen the ‌iPad mini 7‌ as of yet, there's no concrete information. "My guess is it's different," he said. "And maybe better. And maybe gone."

Until now, re

Report claims US probing TSMC over secret Huawei deals — TSMC does not confirm or deny the allegation

A report from The Information surfaced recently, claiming that the U.S. Department of Commerce is reportedly asking Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) about possible dealings with Huawei on smartphone and A.I. chips and whether it's conducting due diligence on its customers to prevent sanctioned companies from acquiring TSMC tech through intermediaries. TSMC does not confirm or deny the allegation. On the other hand, the U.S. Department of Commerce and Huawei haven't commented on the issue yet. "If we have any reason to believe there are potential issues, we will take prompt action to ensure compliance, including conducting investigations and proactively communicating with relevant parties, including customers and regulatory authorities as necessary," said TSMC in a statement to Reuters. Huawei was blacklisted by the U.S. government way back in 2020, fearing that the Chinese government was using the company to spy on American interests. After thi s

iPad Mini 7 Benchmarks Confirm 8GB RAM, 5-Core GPU's Slower Speeds

The seventh-generation iPad mini has now appeared on Geekbench, confirming that it has 8GB of memory and revealing how the 5-core GPU version of the A17 Pro chip performs. The new ‌iPad mini‌, identified as iPad 16,2 on the Geekbe nch database, includes the same A17 Pro SoC first introduced in the iPhone 15 Pro series last year. The six-core chip is clocked at 3.78 GHz, which matches the iPhone version, but with a key distinction—a five-core GPU, which is one core less than the version found in the ‌iPhone‌. This suggests that the iPad mini 7's A17 Pro chip is likely a "binned" version. The new ‌iPad mini‌'s Geekbench scores reveal a range between 2,710 and 2,840 in single-core performance and 6,274 to 6,982 in multi-core performance, positioning it slightly below the ‌iPhone 15‌ Pro in both metrics. For comparison, the ‌iPhone 15‌ Pro's A17 Pro typically scores around 2,888 in single-core and 7,169 in multi-core tests. Nonetheless, the benchmarks confir

Gigabyte introduces Thunderbolt 5 PCIe 4 card with up to 120 Gbps of bandwidth, support for 100W power delivery

Earlier today, Gigabyte unveiled its first Thunderbolt 5 add-in card, the Gigabyte Thunderbolt 5, which uses an Intel JHL9580 Thunderbolt 5 controller over the PCIe 4.0 x4 interface. It features three Mini-DisplayPort ports and two standard USB Type-C ports that are compliant with the Thunderbolt 5 specification. The add-in card also bundles three Mini DisplayPort cables and three internal header cables (two Thunderbolt header cables and one USB 2.0 header cable). By default, Thunderbolt 5 operates at up to 80 Gigabits per second, twice the speed of Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4. However, in select scenarios, particularly when connected to external displays, Thunderbolt 5 can also boost bandwidth up to 120 gigabits per second. Gigabyte advertises support for daisy-chaining up to 10 devices (5 devices per main USB-C port) and the USB-PD (Power Delivery) 3.1 standard with up to 100 watts per port. With the debut of Thunderbolt 5 add-in cards like this, users with at least a PC Ie 4.0 mothe

Need a smartphone gimbal? The DJI Osmo Mobile SE is cheaper than ever!

The DJI Osmo Mobile SE is one of our favorite smartphone gimbals for a good reason. It provides modern features, a portable design, and great functionality at a very reasonable price. If you've been looking to get it, today is your lucky day. The DJI Osmo Mobile SE has hit a new record-low price of just $69, saving you 22% on the retail price. Buy the DJI Osmo Mobile SE gimbal for only $69 This deal is available from Amazon, as well as DJI's website. The only reason we focus on Amazon is because it's a very popular retailer most of you already use, making it a more convenient option. We already recommend the DJI Osmo Mobile SE at its full $89 price; at $69, the value is only better. It comes with a great feature set. The unit features 3-axis stabilization, which means it can stabilize pan, tilt, and roll. The design is also very portable, as you can fold it into a size that can easily fit in an average bag. And while it is an affordable gimbal, it stil

TECNO Pocket Go hits Kickstarter: Handheld gaming PC with a wearable display

The TECNO Pocket Go is a handheld gaming PC with an AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS processor, support for up to 16GB of LPDDR5-6400 memory and 1TB of PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage, and a 50 Wh battery. But it stands out from other recent handhelds like the Valve Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, and Lenovo Legion Go in one key way: there's no built-in display. Instead, the TECNO Pocket Go is a computer that looks like a chunky game controller. You can buy it as a screenless device and plug it into any display. Or you can buy a bundle that includes an AR Pocket Vision wearable display for gaming on the go. First introduced earlier this year, the TECNO Pocket Go is now available for pre-order worldwide through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. Devices are expected to start shipping to backers in December, 2024. A handheld computer that only works when you plug in an external display is certainly unusual, to say the least. But TECNO is positioning the Pocket Go as featuring a "215 inch micro OLE

India plans import curbs on PC parts and laptops — an initiative to encourage domestic manufacturing and reduce dependency on countries like China

India is moving forward with plans to curb laptop and computer imports as part of its broader strategy to boost domestic manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign-made electronics. A recent report by Reuters indicates that the government's decision to introduce import restrictions aims to incentivize multinational tech companies, such as Apple, Dell, and Lenovo, to set up local production units. According to consultancy Mordor Intelligence, India's IT hardware market, including laptops, is valued at nearly $20 billion. Of this, only $5 billion is produced domestically, while most demand is met through imports. Most of these imports come from China, highlighting India's reliance on foreign suppliers for its technology needs. A similar plan to restrict laptop imports was scrapped last year after facing opposition from companies and lobbying by the U.S. Since then, India has monitored imports under a temporary system expiring this year, and companies are required to se

Apple Music Now Lets Artists Create Playlists Based on Concert Set Lists

Apple today introduced a new feature that allows all artists to create Apple Music playlists based on their concert set lists. The playlists will appear on the artist's page in Apple Music, on their concert page in Shazam, and in Spotlight Search on iOS. The feature is built into the Apple Music for Artists tool. "Turn a set list from your latest show into a playlist on Apple Music for Artists on the web," said Apple, in a blog post explaining how artists can use the feature. "Share your Set List playlist with fans on Apple Music and social media to promote upcoming tour dates, let fans relive your concerts, and connect with listeners." More details are available on the Apple Music for Artists website.

6G tests reach a blisteringly quick 938 Gb/s transmission rate, 5000X faster than 5G

6G is shaping up to be one of the largest jumps in network bandwidth in mobile service providers' history. Interesting Engineering reports that researchers have successfully created a 6G network that achieved a 938 Gbps transmission data rate. For perspective, 938 Gbps is almost 5000 times faster than a good to excellent 5G connection on your typical 5G smartphone, which can operate at roughly 200 Mbps. It's even faster when you consider real-world 5G connections that don't have the best signal, which will generally provide well below 100 Mbps. This impressive feat was accomplished by Zhixin Liu and his team at University College London (UCL). The team purportedly used a combination of radio waves and light-based communication across the broadest spectrum of frequencies ever recorded, ranging from 5 GHz to 150 GHz. The researchers used a 145 GHz bandwidth wireless transmission using orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) for the test. This setup takes advant

Qualcomm discontinues Snapdragon Dev Kit mini PC, promises to refund orders

The Snapdragon Dev Kit for Windows is a mini PC with a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite (X1E-001DE) processor that went up for pre-order this summer for $899. Now, just a few months later, Qualcomm has pulled the plug on the little computer. According to Jeff Geerling and xda-developers, customers who ordered one from Arrow Electronics are now receiving emails letting them know that Qualcomm has "made the decision to pause this product and the support of it, indefinitely." The chip maker says it'll refund customers who have already purchased the Snapdragon Dev Kit. When the company first introduced the mini PC earlier this year, it was positioned as a tool for developers that wanted to get started working with Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X series processors. The 8″ x 7″ x 1.3″ computer is powered by one of Qualcomm's most powerful chips to date, with 12 CPU cores, a GPU that delivers up to 4.6 TFLOPS of graphics performance, and a 45 TOPS neural processing unit

iPad Mini 7 Charging Speed Likely Remains at 20W

The seventh-generation iPad mini's charging speed is capped at 20W, according to a Chinese regulatory filing. The new ‌iPad mini‌'s charging speed has seemingly been confirmed through a China Compulsory Certificate (3C) certification report (spotted by 91Mobiles), revealing that th e new model has the same charging specification as its immediate predecessor. According to the 3C certification, the seventh-generation ‌iPad mini‌ (model A2996) supports 20W "fast charging," using a 9VDC x 2.22A power output. This is the same wattage as the sixth-generation ‌iPad mini‌, which also featured a 20W USB-C charger. The listing also mentions a 45W adapter, but the ‌iPad mini‌'s actual charging speed is capped at 20W. This limitation puts it behind several competitors in the market, such as the OnePlus Pad 2, which boasts 67W fast charging. The 2021, sixth-generation ‌iPad mini‌ gained 20W charging thanks to the implementation of a USB-C port, 8W more than the fifth-g

Amazon jumps on nuclear plant investment bandwagon — taps energy companies to power AI data centers

Amazon is the latest tech company to join the nuclear bandwagon, investing in three energy companies to help bring more power output online across two states. The e-commerce giant signed agreements with Energy Northwest, a consortium of public utility companies in Washington State, X-energy, a small modular reactor (SMR) developer, and Dominion Energy, an electric utility provider based in Virginia that operates the North Anna nuclear power station. Amazon Web Services (AWS) CEO Matt Garman said, "Nuclear is a safe source of carbon-free energy that can help power our operations and meet the growing demands of our customers, while helping us progress toward our Climate Pledge commitment to be net-zero across our operations by 2040." This isn't the company's first venture into nuclear power, as it has previously bought a 960-MW data center in Pennsylvania directly connected to the nearby nuclear plant. However, these investments represent Amazon's first direct inv

Apple Secretly Developed Long-Range EV Battery Tech with China's BYD

Apple secretly collaborated with Chinese automaker BYD to develop long-range electric vehicle battery technology as part of its now-nixed Apple Car project, according to Bloomberg. Beginning around 2017, the partnership focused on creating a battery system using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. The joint effort aim ed to produce batteries with longer range and improved safety compared to typical EV batteries of the time. Apple reportedly brought expertise in advanced battery packs and heat management, while BYD contributed manufacturing know-how and advancements in LFP cell technology. The collaboration was part of Apple's since-canceled car project, which the company invested approximately $1 billion per year in over the past decade. Although Apple doesn't own the technology used in BYD's current Blade batteries, the partnership reportedly influenced the development of BYD's battery systems. The project is said to have been led by Alexander Hitzinger on Ap
