Lilbits: Pixel 9a leak, Indieogo’s new shipping guarantee (for some campaigns), and a flexible Arduino

Crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and Crowd Supply started off as platforms for creators to raise money to turn an idea into a real product that's ready to ship. And that means there's always some risk involved: even if a project is fully funded, it's often important to keep in mind that things can go wrong with the manufacturing process, costs can rise, and the product that eventually ships may not live up to the promises made by its creators… if they ship at all. But in recent years some companies have turned to crowdfunding not as a way to raise money to finish making a product, but as a way to generate buzz around or take pre-orders for a product that's pretty much ready to go. Sometimes it can be hard to tell which category a campaign falls under, but Indiegogo has launched a new program that could make it easier: if you see a "Shipping Guarantee" badge, it means that the project meets certain criteria indicating that there's a high

Apple Intelligence Not Device Region Locked to US in Latest Betas

Apple in the latest iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 betas no longer requires users to set their device region to the United States, so now it's just the US English language requirement that remains. In previous betas, users not only had to change Siri's language to the US to access Apple Intelligence, but they also had to change both their device region and language to the US as wel l. However, as per the latest release notes and spotted by 9to5Mac, the requirement to change device region to US appears to have been dropped, which means things like measurement system, temperature, and calendar formatting can remain unchanged with Apple Intelligence enabled. In other words, users running the third betas of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 only have to ensure that English is their preferred language in Settings ➝ General ➝ Language & Region, and that English (United States) is the set Siri language in Settings ➝ Apple Intelligence & Sir

Nvidia addresses significant Blackwell yield issues, production ramps in Q4

On Wednesday, Nvidia admitted that its upcoming Blackwell-based products suffer from low yields, which required the company to re-spin some layers of the B200 processor to improve yields. Nvidia will ramp up production of Blackwell in Q4 2024 and will ship Blackwell GPUs worth several billion dollars in the last quarter of this year.  "We executed a change to the Blackwell GPU mask to improve production yield," a statement by Nvidia reads. "Blackwell production ramp is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter and continue into fiscal 2026. In the fourth quarter, we expect to ship several billion dollars in Blackwell revenue."  Nvidia reaffirmed that it sampled Blackwell GPUs with its customers in the second quarter but admitted that it had to produce 'low-yielding Blackwell material' to meet demand for its Blackwell processors, which impacted its gross margins.  Nvidia's chief executive, Jensen Huang, said during the earnings call that the company has

Beats and Verdy Debut Collectible Bear Figure That Holds Your Beats Pill

Apple's Beats brand is partnering with Japanese graphic artist Verdy for a limited edition collectible art figure that doubles as a holder for the new Beats Pill speaker. The $500 hyper-limited drop includes a matte black Beats Pill and a cream-colored bear named Vear that holds the speaker between its paws. Beats has a tradition of fun characters associated with the Beats Pill, including ad campaigns and speaker stands for previous models centered around the Beats Pill Characters or "Dudes" in various colors. Apple revived the Dudes for the launch of the updated Beats Pill this year, so the new Vear character fits right into that theme even though it won't be seeing a wide release. Beats and Verdy also have a history of collaborations, most recently in 2023 for Beats Flex earphones themed around Verdy's Girls Don't Cry brand. The Vear and Beats Pill bundle will be available to order this Friday, August 30, exclusively through Complex, with s

Deal: I can finally afford one of those huge 49-inch Samsung ultrawide monitors!

I’ve always wanted one of those huge, curved, ultrawide Samsung monitors, but they are always insanely expensive, often costing multiple thousands of dollars. Thanks to this deal, though, I may finally be able to afford one! The Samsung Viewfinitiy S9 49-inch ultrawide monitor is 33% off, bringing the full price down to $800. The Samsung Viewfinitiy S9 49-inch ultrawide monitor is mainly made for office dwellers and business users, while most other super ultrawide monitors are gaming screens. This means the look of this monitor is much more undertoned, as are the general specs, but the specs aren’t bad, they just aren’t insanely good. For example, this model has a 49-inch panel with a 5120 x 1440 Dual QHD resolution. This is essentially the same as putting tw

This Raspberry Pi keyholder will backup your flash drive data

One thing is for sure, with enough Raspberry Pi you could heavily automate a smart home so crazy that Captain Picard would blush. We've seen tons of cool smart home creations like this ChatGPT smart fridge project or this Fallout-themed home automation terminal. But it's the little things that really make a difference, like Thinklearndo's latest Pi-powered creation—a keyholder that automatically backs up data from any flash drive you connect to it. Not everyone keeps a flash drive on hand and but for those that do, it can be a very personal device with tons of important information. But what happens when that data is lost or stolen? That's what inspired Thinklearndo's latest creation which will create backups of your data instantly each night when you plug your flash drive to this Pi-powered keyholder. To use the system, all you have to do is plug in your keychain flash drive into the USB port on the keyholder. An LCD screen lets you know when it's ready to re

A few days left: Watch this comedy gem before it leaves Netflix

If you’re looking for a good laugh this weekend, it may be a good idea to settle in and watch a classic comedy that’s leaving Netflix on the 31st of this month. I’m talking about Liar Liar. A Jim Carrey gem. A movie that showcases his comedic strengths while giving you a little something to think about. Let’s get into what this movie has to offer to you. What makes Liar Liar special The premise of the movie is simple. Jim Carrey’s character, Fletcher Reede, is a great lawyer, a bad father, and a questionable human being. All of this is because of his uncanny ability to lie. He lies for his clients, making straight-faced arguments and fabricating stories so he wins every case, cementing his reputation as an excellent lawyer with shaky morals. Rich, shifty people clamor to become his clients. However, this ability to lie holds him back in the other areas of his life. No one trusts him. His loyal wife has lost faith, divorced him, and moved on. The only person who is naive enough to bu

Microsoft backports AMD branch prediction improvement to Windows 11 23H2, update available now — more users will see Ryzen performance improvements

If you're patiently waiting for Windows 11's 24H2 update to see a performance bump for your Zen 3, Zen 4, or Zen 5 CPU, you no longer need to twiddle your thumbs. In a statement to Tom's Hardware, AMD said that the branch prediction optimizations allowing for those improvements have been backported to Windows 11 23H2. The update, KB5041587, can be found under Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. "We expect the performance uplift to be very similar between 24H2 and 23H2 with KB5041587 installed," an AMD spokesperson said. Windows 11 24H2 is currently in Release Preview as part of Windows Insider. A handful of reviewers have found multiple games showing performance uplifts, though at least one has seen regressions in some titles as well. While the improved performance should go back to Zen 3, it's really AMD's new Ryzen 9000 series processors that need a bit of a shine. Some of the new chips, like the Ryzen 9 9950X, saw negative revi

Lenovo launches Legion Go accessories including a docking station, controller connector, and keyboard

Nearly a year after introducing the Lenovo Legion Go handheld gaming PC with an 8.8 inch, 144 Hz display, an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, and a set of detachable controllers, Lenovo is expanding the ecosystem with a series of new accessories for the Legion Go. Those accessories include an official USB-C dock, carrying case, joystick caps, and a "charging connector" that lets you turn the left and right controllers into a single unit that looks more like a traditional game controller for easy charging and gameplay. There's also a new multi-device Bluetooth mini keyboard that's not designed specifically for use with the Legion Go, but Lenovo notes that its compact size makes it a decent companion for the little computer. Since the Legion Go is a full-fledged PC, you could theoretically use any keyboard, dock, or USB-C charging accessories with the system. But here's what the company's new official accessories have to offer. Legion Go USB-C Dock Thi

RISC-V CPU runs The Witcher 3 at 15 FPS — 64-core chip paired with Radeon RX 5500 XT GPU deliver laggy gameplay

RISC-V, the open source, royalty-free CPU architecture, is in the very early stages of development and adoption compared to mainstream ARM and x86/x64 CPUs— but despite that, Box86/Box64 developers still managed to get last-gen AAA title The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt running on a RISC-V PC. Besides Box64, which was used to emulate x86 instructions in general, Wine and DXVK helped fill the gaps using Linux instead of Windows. The developers wrote a detailed blog post on how this was accomplished and uploaded video footage of the game running on YouTube. So, before you get too excited about a future where PC gamers don't need to rely on Microsoft, Intel, or AMD to play games, The Witcher 3 is only managing a measly 15 FPS in these conditions. However, even being launch-able, much less semi-playable on RISC-V, the game is still a significant technical achievement and bodes exceptionally well for the future of open-source architecture. iOS 18: Add a Tint to Your iPhone Home Screen Icons

Apple in iOS 18 has made a wealth of customization options available for your iPhone Home Screen, one of which is the ability to add a tint to your app icons. Essentially, the tint feature offers a unique way to customize your device's appearance by changing the color of all your icons at once. Unlike individual ico n customization, tinting affects every icon on your app pages, Home Screen, and App Library, creating a unified look across your entire interface. Tinting works by first desaturating all icons and then applying a single color overlay. This process results in a monochromatic appearance, which means you'll lose the original colors of your app icons and widgets, but what you gain is a more cohesive look. It's a powerful tool for creating a coordinated, stylish interface that reflects your personal taste, so be sure to experiment with it. To choose a tint color, you can also use an eyedropper tool to select a shade from your wallpaper, or manually adjust h

Apple may switch to 16GB of memory as default for new M4 series — test machines hint at a transition even on the base model

An Apple insider has noted that a quartet of new base-level Mac computers, all with at least 16GB of RAM, are being tested. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says the Macs are currently known by the cryptic model identifiers of "16,1," "16,2," "16,3," and "16,10," and such devices are usually spotted shortly ahead of their launch. Despite growing criticism, Apple has steadfastly sold entry-level Macs with a minimum of 8GB of RAM since 2012. According to Gurman's report and based on developer test logs he has had eyes on, all the new Macs are M4 Apple Silicon models. That's no surprise, but even the lowest-end base model seen comes with 16GB of RAM on board. Three of the Macs use an M4 chip with 10 CPU cores and 10 GPU cores, and there is a lower-end processor with eight CPU cores and eight GPU cores. According to Gurman, even the lowest-end model is partnered with at least 16GB of RAM. Some also come with 32GB of RAM on board. Bloomberg's

The discount applies only to the Black model, not the Cream color version. If you want the Cream iteration, that one goes for $80, which is still a nice discount considering the full price is $120. The Marshall Willen is pretty nice, but one of our main complaints was the price. At under $65, the portable speaker is a very enticing proposition, though. It has a nice sound quality considering its size. It also happens to have a very nice design, offering that classic look Marshall is now so known for. Not only does it look great, but it is a very resistant lit

Meta Cancels High-End Mixed Reality Headset After Apple Vision Pro Struggles

Meta has canceled work on a high-end mixed reality headset that it was developing to compete with the Apple Vision Pro, reports The Information. Meta this week told employees to quit working on the device following a product review meeting that involved Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The now-canceled device was slated for launch in 2027, and it was meant to be equipped with high-resolution micro OLED displays, which is what Apple used for the Vision Pro. Meta was aiming to sell the device for under $1,000, but that was not going to be possible with the high cost of the displays. Meta is continuing development on the Quest 4, a successor to the Quest 3, and that headset could come out in 2026. The Quest 3 is priced at $500, which is also the likely target price point for its successor. Meta is also focusing on software rather than hardware, and it announced a Horizon OS platform for third-party hardware makers earlier this year. When the Vision Pro launched, Meta was hoping that t
