The Steam Deck handheld gaming PC now comes with a choice of LCD or AMOLED displays. But what if you already have and LCD model and want to upgrade to an AMOLED display? Officially your only option is to buy a new handheld. Unofficially though? There's another option.

DeckSight is running a crowdfunding campaign for a 1080p AMOLED display that's designed to be a drop-in replacement for the screen in the Steam Deck LCD. Not only will it give you more vivid colors, but it also increases the display resolution from (the Steam Deck's native displays are 1280 x 800 pixels).

In other recent tech news from around the web, the Orange Pi Neo handheld gaming PC with a Linux-based operating system has been delayed… but it's now expected to ship soon. Microsoft is developing a user interface to make Windows work better on handheld gaming PCs. And NVIDIA is expanding its GeForce NOW game streaming service with support for the Steam Deck, Meta Quest 3/3S, and Apple Vision Pro.

A drop-in low power FHD OLED display upgrade for LCD model Steam Decks [Crowd Supply] DeckSight

DeckSight is a 1080p AMOLED display panel that's designed to be a drop-in replacement for the LCD screen in the entry-level Steam Deck. Available in $130 glossy or $140 anti-glare options, it's crowdfunding now and should ship in May/June, 2025. You'll need to install a patched BIOS to use the new screen though, and the DeckSight developers may have to keep pushing out updates in response to OTA updates from Valve. 

This project is not from the same folks who brought us the DeckHD a few years ago – that kit also lets you upgrade a Steam Deck display, but it's a 1920 x 1200 pixel IPS LCD screen rather than a 1920 x 1080 pixel AMOLED display.

The Orange Pi Neo is a handheld gaming PC unveiled early last year which is expected to run Manjaro Linux software and have AMD Zen 4 + RDNA 3 hardware. It didn't hit the streets in 2024 as originally planned, but it's now expected to ship in Q1, 2025.

Microsoft could bring an Xbox-inspired user interface to Windows for handheld gaming PCs this year, which could go a long way to fending off competition from SteamOS (which is expanding beyond the Steam Deck this year).
