Mini PC maker GMKTec is preparing to launch their first system that's positioned for use as a NAS (network-attached storage device). The upcoming GMK G9 is a small computer with a 6-watt Intel N150 quad-core processor, 12GB of LPDDR5-4800 memory, and 64GB of eMMC storage.

But what makes this system different from most of the mini PCs GMK offers are its four M.2 2280 slots that let you equip the system with up to 32TB of solid state storage. It's also marketed as a "dual system" that ships with both Windows 11 Pro and Ubuntu software pre-installed, although if you really want to use it as a NAS you may want to install a purpose-built OS like TrueNAS, OpenMediaVault or Unraid.

While GMK is marketing the computer as a NAS, it's basically a mini PC with support for lots of storage. You could use it as a file server, media center, or for other applications.

Ports include:

  • 2 x 2.5 Gb Ethernet
  • 2 x HDMI
  • 3 x USB 3.2 Type-A
  • 1 x USB Type-C (for data and video)
  • 1 x USB Type-C (for power only)
  • 1 x 3.5mm audio
  • There's also support for WiFi 6E.

While most computers that are sold as NAS devices have 3.5 inch drive bays that you can use to add hard drives, the GMK G9 is an SSD-only device. That means it will cost more to equip this system with large amounts of storage than some other models, but it also means that you'll get quiet and speedy storage.

That may not the be the most cost-effective solution for everyone, but if you can get by with smaller amounts of storage, it makes for a pretty pleasant experience. I've been using an Asustor AS5402T NAS for a little over the year, and while I was originally disappointed at how noisy the system was when I configured it with a couple of hard drives, I eventually decided to make use of the system's M.2 slots to go SSD-only. The system has been running nearly silently 24/7 ever since.

GMK hasn't announced official pricing or availability details for the G9 NAS yet, but in a blog post the company says it's coming soon. Meanwhile at least one retailer (that I've never heard of) is showing a product page for the GMK G9 with more details… but I'd take the $289 price tag with a grain of salt, since the store is showing the same price for models with no SSD, a 512GB SSD, and a 1TB SSD.

Update: Prices at vopTronics start at $289 for a model with 12GB of RAM and no storage or $319 for a 12GB/512GB model.
