The Orange Pi 5 Ultra is a new single-board computer that's nearly identical to the Orange Pi 5 Max that launched this summer. Both are credit card-sized devices that look like a Raspberry Pi with a few extra connectors including an M.2 slot for an SSD. And both are powered by Rockchip RK3588 octa-core processors.
But while the Orange Pi 5 Max has dual HDMI outputs allowing you to connect the board to up to two displays, the Orange Pi 5 Ultra has a single HDMI out port and an HDMI input that allows you to connect a video source to the little computer for video capture or processing. The new board is available for purchase from AliExpress, where you can pick up a model with 16GB of RAM for $125.
The HDMI ports are the only significant differences I can spot between the Orange Pi 5 Max and Ultra. Both boards support WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. Both supports up to 16GB of LPDDR5 memory. And both have multiple storage options including an eMMC module, microSD card reader, and M.2 M-Key slot with support for PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe storage.
Since both boards also feature MIPI-CSI camera connectors and USB ports, you theoretically don't need an HDMI input for video capture. But the HDMI 2.0 input on the Orange Pi 5 Ultra could make it easier to connect common video sources with support for resolutions up to 4K at 60 frames per second.
The Orange Pi 5 Ultra joins a growing family of Orange Pi 5-branded single-board computers, which also includes the Orange Pi 5, Orange Pi 5 Pro, and Orange Pi 5 Plus:
