The Onyx BOOX P6 is a phone-sized device that's sort of what you'd get if you crossed a Kindle and a smartphone. Lika a phone it's designed to fit comfortably in your hand or pocket, runs an Android-based operating system and supports third-party apps. But like most eReaders it has a paper-like E Ink display and lacks support for cellular data.
The Onyx BOOX P6 isn't available worldwide yet, but it's launching soon in China, where it's basically an update to the Onyx BOOX Palma, which has developed a bit of a cult following. The new model is very similar to the Palma, but takes at least one step forward and one step that's… a little tougher to classify.
Both the P6 and Palma have 6.13 inch black and white E Ink displays, unspecified Qualcomm Snapdragon octa-core processors, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage plus a microSD card reader with support for removable storage.
So what's new? The Onyx BOOX P6 ships with an operating system based on Android 13, while the Palma ships with Android 11. I wouldn't be surprised if it that means it also has a newer Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, although it's worth keeping in mind that newer doesn't always mean significantly faster.
Keep in mind that, like most Android-based eBook readers, you can install a wide range of Android apps on a device like the Palma. But it's first and foremost made for reading.
Onyx BOOX says the device features technology that enables support for fast screen refresh rates, but even at their fastest, E Ink displays cannot hit the 60 Hz or higher refresh rates you'd get from an LCD or OLED display. And the higher the refresh rates go on most E Ink displays, the worse the image quality usually becomes.
Another difference? The Palma has a 16MP rear camera, while the newer P6 has no camera. While cameras aren't particularly common on devices with E Ink displays, they do have their uses. You might not want to line up normal photos on a greyscale screen with a slow refresh rate, but you might want to use a camera to scan receipts or documents as images or documents for later reference.
Losing the camera could help reduce the price of the new model though. And it does result in a slightly lighter-weight device. The Onyx BOOX P6 weighs 10 grams less than the Palma.
