Lenovo acquired IBM's PC business in 2005. Nine years later the company bought Motorola's smartphones business from Google. And in 2023 the company brought its two brands together to launch the Lenovo ThinkPhone by Motorola, a $700 smartphone with a ThinkPad-inspired design and a few business-friendly security features.

Now the company has introduced a new model with a similar design, but a few changes that suggest the company may be looking to lower the price tag rather than to boost performance.

The new model is called the ThinkPhone 25, and it has the same Aramid Fiber material on the back cover and, like its predecessor, it's designed with durability in mind. Both phones are MIL-STD-810H tested and rated IP68 for dust and water resistance.

But the new model comes with one thing that last year's model lacked: a promise that Motorola will deliver at least five major OS updates as well as five years of security updates, which means that this phone will be supported into 2029.

Instead of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 series processor though, the ThinkPhone 25 has a MediaTek Dimensity processor. Instead of a USB 3.1 Type-C port, it has a USB 2.0 Type-C port. And instead of LPDDR5 memory, it has LPDDR4x.

The new display is a bit of a lateral move – it's a little smaller, but has a higher resolution, higher pixel density, and support for higher peak brightness. But it also has a slightly lower refresh rate and touch sampling rate.

Lenovo hasn't announced North American pricing or availability for the ThinkPhone 25 yet, but it's expected to sell for around €499 in Europe.

Here's an overview of how the new ThinkPhone 25 stacks up against last year's Lenovo ThinkPhone by Motorola:
