The PasocomMini PC-8801mkIISR is a palm-sized computer that's designed to look like a classic Japanese computer from the 1980s. Expected to hit the streets in Japan in spring, 2025 for 30,000 JPY (about $200), the little computer doesn't just look like a tiny NEC PC-8801mkIISR, it should work like one too, as it ships with an emulator that will let you run software designed for that classic computer.
But this is a (sort of) modern device with modern HDMI and USB ports that should make it easier to use with recent keyboards, mice, displays, and other accessories. It's also a just about 1/4th the size of the original, with the new model measuring 99.5 x 85.7 x 31mm (about 3.9″ x 3.4″ x 1.2″).
The upcoming mini PC ships with an emulator for the Zilog Z80-based NEC μPD780C-1 4 MHz processor found in the original NEC-8801mkIISR, 64KB of RAM, 48KB of VRAM, and 4KB of Text RAM. There's also support for emulating Yamaha YM2203 and YM2608 sound chips.
There's also said to be support for up to a 640 x 200 pixel color display, up to a 640 x 400 pixel monochrome display, or up to three 640 x 200 pixel monochrome displays.
The PasocomMini PC-8801mkIISR runs N88-BASIC software and it's expected to ship with 10 classic games, although users should be able to load their own titles using a microSD card.
Aside from the retro mini PC's small size, the biggest thing setting the upcoming device model apart from the original may be its ports. It has a full-sized HDMI port, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 Type-A ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a microSD card reader. There are also stereo speakers built in.
It's unlikely that this particular retro PC will be released outside of Japan.
