- Google has traditionally released just two flagship Pixel models each year - a standard and a Pro variant.
- However, leaked renders suggest Google may launch three Pixel 9 models in 2024 - a standard Pixel 9, a smaller Pixel 9 Pro, and a larger Pixel 9 Pro XL.
Pricing Implications:
- The addition of a third high-end model raises concerns about potential price increases for the Pixel 9 lineup.
- If pricing remains similar to the Pixel 8 ($699) and 8 Pro ($999), a smaller Pixel 9 Pro could slot in around $849-$899 as a middle option.
- However, the article speculates the Pixel 9 Pro XL could push into the "ultra-premium" $1,100+ territory to compete with Samsung and Apple's most expensive models.
Challenges of Ultra-Premium Pricing:
- An ultra-premium non-foldable Pixel would be a significant challenge for Google as a new entrant in this premium segment.
- Google has traditionally undercut rivals on pricing and lacks the brand strength, retail presence, and after-sales support of Samsung and Apple.
- Google's in-house Tensor chips have also historically underperformed, making a ultra-high price difficult to justify based on performance alone.
History of Premium Pixel Pricing:
- The article notes the Pixel 3 series was priced higher than Samsung's flagship in 2018, showing Google has charged premium prices before.
- However, recent Tensor-powered Pixels have had more aggressive pricing.
Impact on Standard Pixel 9:
- To further differentiate the Pro models, Google may strip back certain features from the standard Pixel 9.
- This could make the more affordable Pixel 8a a better value option than the Pixel 9 for some buyers.
Reader Sentiment:
- A poll of Android Authority readers showed preference for three Pixel models over just two.
- A smaller, pocket-friendly Pixel 9 Pro could boost the lineup's appeal.
Conclusion:
- With rivals like Samsung and Apple pushing ultra-premium pricing, the article argues price increases for Google's Pixel flagships seem inevitable.
- The real question is whether hikes will come with the Pixel 9 series or potentially delayed until Google moves to its own rumored in-house chips.

Obsessed with my Pixel 8 Pro! The camera takes mind-blowing pictures, especially in low light. Battery life is great, lasting all day even with heavy use. It's super smooth and fast, everything just flies on this phone. Loving every bit of it and it's definitely better than iPhone in my opinion. Only thing is I personally didn't like the colours offered much. So I went ahead with getting pastel colour skins from gadgetshieldz. Definitely can't give up this phone because of a minor inconvenience. Worth it!
